A major class action has been launched against General Motors Australia and New Zealand, accusing the company of selling Holden vehicles with faulty transmissions over a staggering 13 years. The legal case, led by law firm Maurice Blackburn, claims that certain vehicles purchased between January 1, 2011, and December 24, 2024, were equipped with defective GM 6L 45, GM 6L 50, or GM 6L 80 transmissions.
The affected models include popular vehicles such as the Commodore VE, Commodore VF, and the Colorado. According to Maurice Blackburn’s principal lawyer, Kimi Nishimura, the issue lies within the transmission systems, allegedly caused by a design flaw in the torque converter and torque converter clutch. These defects are said to have resulted in transmission shuddering, harsh gear shifts, excessive vibrations, fluid leaks, and increased servicing requirements.
The class action claims that General Motors breached Australian consumer law by failing to provide vehicles of acceptable quality and engaging in misleading conduct. Through this legal case, Maurice Blackburn is seeking compensation for affected car owners who have experienced losses due to these transmission issues.
Although affected car owners don’t need to register to take part, the law firm encourages registration to receive updates. More details, including a full list of affected vehicles, can be found online. General Motors Australia and New Zealand declined to comment, maintaining their focus on customer support amidst these allegations.
