Police investigate man’s death five days after serious assault at Townsville NRL game

Investigations are ongoing to determine a 38-year-old man’s cause of death after he was found deceased at an address near Mackay.

It comes after he had been seriously assaulted at a Townsville sporting venue on September 14.

He sustained serious injuries and was taken to Townsville University Hospital.

He was found dead at a Ball Bay home, five days later, on September 19.

A 34-year-old Kelso man was taken into custody at the time of the alleged assault and charged with one count of grievous bodily harm.

Investigators are appealing to any witnesses, or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward.

In particular, police are seeking vision of three people on scooters in vicinity of Sir Leslie Thiess Drive between 6.30pm and 7pm, and anyone present on the southern side car park along Pride Street between 9.30pm and 10.15pm who may have witnessed the assault.

As part of the ongoing investigation police will await the results of a post mortem to determine the man’s cause of death.
